1. Grid
Grids are networks of guidelines that are typically horizontal and vertical. Depending on the designer, the lines are spaced out evenly, angled, irregular, or circular. Grids serve as a guide and help generate form, arrange images, and organize information. They can be used strictly or as a starting point.
Grids are most used in architecture, print designs, modern urbanism, and technology. Modern cities use grids for streets to promote circulation within neighborhoods and the flow of traffic. Modern buildings use uniform ribbons of metal and glass to wrap a building's volume in one go.
2. Pattern
The design element of pattern has existed throughout human history and many cultures around the world. Universally, there are diverse styles and icons that are dependent on certain times and traditions. They evolve within and among cultures, they move in and out of fashion.
Some examples of pattern are dots, stripes, and grids. They provide an infinite range of designs. Endless variations can be created while also building complexity around a logical core.
3. Point, Line, Plane
Point, line, and plane are the building blocks of design. With it, designers create images, icons, textures, patterns, diagrams, animations, and typographic systems. Diagrams builds relationships. Planes map and connect data. Textures and patterns interact with large groups of points and lines to form distinctive and engaging surfaces. Typography consists of points that form lines and fields of text.
